Color Club Pop Play Collection - Swatches & Review

Sunday 16 July 2017

I know I have been babbling on about the Color Club Pop Play Collection for what seems like forever and I have been doing a lot of nail art with them, but I have finally gotten around to swatching them.  Yay!  My swatch pile is slowly getting smaller...and then it grows again... well you know how these things go.  I have been behaving and haven't been buying much recently just so I can keep things under control.  My wishlist is getting a little out of control but anyway, we aren't here to talk about that.  Let's talk about the Pop Play Collection.  This collection features twelve "bright and bubbly" matte shades for Summer.

All Dolled Up is a bright pink matte.  It will come as no surprise that I love the colour of this one.  The formula is really thick and it's not very good at leveling itself out.  I used two coats for my swatch.

All Fun And Games is a bright orange matte.  The formula of this one is a little thick but definitely not as thick as All Dolled Up.  Again, it's not a self leveling polish.  I used three coats but you could possibly get away with two coats depending on how well it applies (I had some nails that were ok and others that definitely need the third coat).

Chalk Board Black is a matte black.  This one is close to being a one coater and the formula is easy to work with.  It does have visible brush strokes, and doesn't stay matte as long as a black creme with a matte top coat (well that is just my experience).  Personally I think you would be best to skip this one as there are better matte black polishes available.  My swatch shows two coats.

Don't Toy With Me is a coral matte.  Another really nice colour.  The formula is the same as All Fun And Games.  It's a little thick but not as thick as All Dolled Up.  My swatch shows two coats.

Friend Zone is a yellow matte.  The formula of this one is horrible.  It is difficult to apply, applies really unevenly, and split on the first coat when it dried.  I used three coats for my swatch, however it probably needs another one to two coats as it is still a little uneven.

Having A Ball is a neon green creme.  I like the colour of this one.  The formula is ok, again it is quite uneven.  My swatch shows three coats.

No Curfew is a blue matte.  This one definitely has one of the best formulas in the collection.  It applies well and you could get away with one coat.  I am also a big fan of the colour.  I used two coats for my swatch.

Out Of Your League is a yellow toned orange matte.  Again I like this colour but it does apply unevenly.  My swatch shows three coats.

Party Teal Dawn is a teal matte.  This is the biggest disappointment of this collection.  It's such a great colour but it cracks open as it dries.  I was hoping it would be like Friend Zone and that the cracks would only happen on the first coat but nope.  The cracks got worse on the second coat.  I didn't bother with a third coat because I don't think there was any way to save this polish.

Play Date is a purple matte.  Now this is definitely right up my alley.  I like it both shiny and matte.  It's such a stunning colour.  The formula is quite good for a matte polish.  I should point out that this was the last polish I swatched at night before going to bed, when I woke up the next day there was what appeared to be some cracks/wrinkles in the base layer.  I am not sure if it dried like this or it wasn't fully dry before I went to bed.  I just thought I should mention this in case that it is a fault with the polish when it dries.  My swatch shows two coats.

Players Gonna Play is a light blue matte.  Such a pretty colour.  This one doesn't apply smoothly.  It seems to hold the brush strokes more than the other polishes.  I used two coats for my swatch.

Playing The Field is a green matte.  The formula is pretty good and needed three coats to be opaque.

If you have been following me on Instagram or seen any of my nail art posts featuring some of these polishes then you will know how excited I was to actually swatch this collection.  Sadly, I am disappointed.  I know that mattes are tricker to apply than regular polish but I wasn't expecting the formulas to be this uneven and not self leveling.  I am also really disappointed that Party Teal Dawn cracks open.  I do really love the colours in this collection and will definitely keep using them in my nail art.  I don't think I will be grabbing for them to use as a full nail though.

What do you think of this collection?

  1. Do you think using a polish thinner would help this collection apply better and not crack?

    1. Honestly I'm not sure. I've never put thinner in a matte polish. I also don't know why Party Teal Dawn cracked on me. I didn't find the formula of that one particular thick so I don't think that is the reason. I have heard that other shades in this collection have cracked on other people too.

    1. Thank you Kathleen. I'm glad you find my reviews helpful (and helps you save your money - or at least spend it more wisely lol). I did purchase this collection myself but strangely I have no regrets. I really like the colours and will definitely keep using them in nail art.

Anything that I am sent will always have "press sample" written usually just under the heading of a post of mine. That being said whether things are sent to me or not I will always give my honest opinion. I know how expensive polish and all things related to it can be so I would hate for someone to buy something based on me saying I like it, if I don't.

  3. Thank you for reviewing these! Where I live [Canada], Color Clubs are the cheapest mainstream polishes I can buy [$4 CAD], so I always appreciate a review of their collections, even if in this case, it could have been better.

    1. Glad I can help. I pretty much only buy the Color Club Collections that interest me, only because they are quite expensive for me to buy (I have to buy them from the US and shipping etc is so expensive).

  4. Did you try putting a shiny topcoat on this polish to show how it looked?

    1. I didn't for swatching purposes because they are matte polishes. I have used the polishes in nail art and have done a top coat over them. There really isn't any difference, it's just shiny instead of matte :)
