China Glaze x Sesame Street You Do Hue Collection - Swatches & Review

Monday 20 May 2019

China Glaze recently released a nude collection (the Body & Sol Collection - you can find my swatches and review of this collection here) but I was super excited to see that not long after China Glaze have released a collection full of colour!  This twelve piece collection is made in collaboration with Sesame Street and is called You Do Hue Collection.  Each of the bottles in this collection comes with a printed lid with a few of the different Sesame Street characters.  I do like when brands switch up their lids sometimes - it makes them stand out in my drawers.  Anyway, enough about the lids , let's talk about the polish because that is the most important thing.

Ah Ah Ah-mazing is a silver lilac metallic which is also kinda pearly.  I really liked the looks of this in the bottle but I hate it on the nails.  It is brush stroke city and just looks horrible.  My camera/lighting does make this look a lot more even than it looks in person.  If this colour was a creme polish then I would get on board with it.  The formula is easy to use and it is opaque in two coats.

Beak On Fleek! is a matte yellow.  I'm not a fan of this one either.  The formula is patchy and streaky, and just a bit of a pain to work with.  There are matte polishes that are a lot worse than this but there are also heaps that are a million times better.  I think if you are looking for matte yellow nails I would say use a regular yellow and a matte top coat.  You will get a better result.  For my swatch I used three coats, but as you can tell it's still a little uneven and needs another coat or two.

Dat Color Dough is a blue and silver microglitter in a clear base.  I think this one is really pretty and sparkly (as you would expect from a glitter polish).  As it is in a clear base it is sheer and requires some layering.  It is quite glitter packed so it does build up to be close to opaque in three coats (which is what I used for my swatch) but you can just sponge it on if you want to build it up quicker.

Ernie Your Stripes is an orange with a strong gold shimmer.  This one is really sheer and reminds me a little of a Zoya polish (I can't remember the name of it).  I personally think that this one would benefit from a base colour of some kind.  I used three coats for my swatch but there is still a slight visible nail line.

Free To Be Sesame is a green jelly with green and holographic microglitters.  I love this one!  I think it is a gorgeous colour and so sparkly.  The formula is great and easy to use.  You can stop at two coats if you don't mind it being a little see through at the tips, however I used three coats for my swatch.  I should also point out that this one does look a little more holo in person than in my pictures.

Fur Real Though is a hot pink jelly.  I really wished that this polish was more opaque than what it is.  The colour is really pretty.  I would definitely wear it again but with a white base.  The formula is easy to use and applies evenly.  I used three coats for my swatch, but it still has a visible nail line and needs at least another coat or two to cover that.

Grover It is a navy blue jelly with microglitters in blue and holographic.  I love this one as well.  It's gorgeous.  The formula is easy to use, but does drag a little.  You can stop at two coats, however I used three coats for my swatch.  This one is more holographic than it looks in my pictures.  My camera didn't want to pick up the holo properly.

I Believe In Snuffy is a peachy pearly/shimmer.  I'm really not 100% sure how to describe this one.  I'm not a fan of this one.  It is sheer and has visible brush strokes.  I used three coats for my swatch, however it does need at least another one or two coats.

I Count Even... is a bright purple sheer tint.  I absolutely love the colour of this one but I really wish it was a creme or at least a jelly that the colour could build up.  Sadly, it's not.  But I don't mind it over a white base.  The formula is easy to use and applies evenly.  I used two coats on my ring and pinkie nails, and one coat on my middle and index nails.  As you can tell there isn't much difference in colour between these because there isn't much pigment in this polish.

Living In The Elmo-ment is a red crelly with silver holographic glitters.  I'm neither here nor there with this one.  It's not bad but it's far from being a favourite.  The formula is easy to use and applies evenly.  I used three coats for my swatch.

Monster Piece is a pink with holographic flakes.  I love this one!  The colour is gorgeous and it is so sparkly.  It is a little on the sheer side but it easy to use.  My swatch shows three coats.

Trash Can-do Attitude is a metallic green with a golden sheen.  I think this in an ok polish.  I don't love it, but I don't hate it.    The formula is easy to use but it does leave visible brush strokes (these definitely aren't as bad as some of the other polishes in this collection).  It is a little on the sheer side and needed three coats to get rid of the visible nails.

I really had such high hopes for this collection but now that I have swatched them I'm really not sure.  There are a few polishes I like but then there are quite a few that I don't like at all.  I feel like that is a rare thing for me when it comes to China Glaze.  Normally I am a huge fan.  Anyway, my personal picks would have to be Monster Piece, Grover It and Free To Be Sesame.

What do you think of the China Glaze x Sesame Street Collection?  Will you be picking up any of the shades?

  1. I love Monster Piece, for me, they could have done the whole collection on that holographic finish and it would be perfect!
    Lovely swatches, as usual!

    1. Oh that would be amazing! I would definitely be on board with a collection like that! Maybe CG will have one for us in the future.

      Thank you :)

  2. Such a shame they put so little heart into this collection. The promo image, the name of the collection, and the images on the caps are very confusing and don't say "Sesame Street" to me (what's with the fish carcass on the caps, is that supposed to be Oscar's trash?) And as you have discovered for us, the formulas all suck and this frost trend in general is ridiculous. Otherwise I would have been a sucker for this collection, I was just watching old Sesame Streets lately!

    1. I've never really been a fan of Sesame Street so I don't have much of an emotional connection to it. I also didn't see the promo image before buying this collection (although come to think of it I don't think I have seen any promo for it). But I do have to agree with you about the formulas and frost. That I'm not a fan of - but there are a few great polishes in this collection (if you can look at the polish itself and not the name).

  3. The glow from the frosts reminds me of the old days. I wonder how they would look with the final coat sponged on to hide brush strokes? Might pick up a few.

    1. I've tried sponging on polishes like these that leave visible brush strokes and you just get a more a of textured look from the sponging rather than smooth coverage. Either way, I don't think they are a good look - but that is just my opinion. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who are ok with visible brush strokes :)

  4. I feel the opposite I like tyus collection was very cool I'm pissed that I live in Canada and I was only able to get 5 of them I love the green one very nice fir mermaid nails same with the green jelly with holos which I could not get I also got snuffy which was ok...and the pink jelly which was really nice and I Normally don't care for pink I like that they are sheer because I can out flakies or glitter between the layers which is what I did with that nice purple one . You have to do like 4 layers put your flakes in between then one more layer and if you want more flakes then top coat.looks wicked the one I wasn't as fond of was the yellow it was hard to put on but has a neat texture I am excited for monster piece free to be sesame and the one I want most Ernie your stripes . I love that they did so much jelly and so much variation they need to do more like this

    1. I can understand the disappointment of not being able to get the polishes you want. I'm in Australia and we don't get China Glaze here. I have to order mine from the US and end up paying more for shipping than the polish itself.

  5. And for peiple whining about streaks I like those too just make sure your brush strokes are straight up and down and it makes the nail appear slimmer and they came out with stickers I was a little let down was hoping fir bigger with some color to them ...can't win em all right?

    1. Like with all polishes it all comes down to personal preference and I totally respect that. And you are totally correct - you can't win them all. :)

  6. I think people are being way too nit picky a bit this bold collection ypu are going to make them torn back to nudes ugh as you can see they added many different types into this collection so there's something fir everyone there's a matte frost jelly crelly holo large holo flakie holo glitter and that nice gold tone green I love I think they did great much better than that snore fest sol

    1. I honestly haven't look at anyone else's review of this collection so I can't really comment on others being too "nit picky". I think at the end of the day everyone will have something to say about any collection (whether it's a mainstream brand or an indie brand) and there is always going to be good comments and bad.

  7. This collection is probably the worst I've seen. Nothing about it is Sesame Street. Trash Can-do Attitude is terrible. If it's supposed to represent Oscar the Grouch, it's an awful mistake.

  8. I bought this whole collection for 20.00$ US at ULTA on sale and w a coupon code. For that price it works out to &1.66 each so I don't much care about being picky. I plan on gifting to my 7 yr. old granddaughter for Xmas even though she's never seen Sesame Street. She loves nail polish!

  9. Hi there! My total love is Free To Be Sesame!! As I'm fan of glitters & sparkles, especially for Christmas time it's terrific choice, isn't it? Being honest, I started using China Glaze polishes like 5-6 months ago and I'm very satisfied in terms of price/quality, I can get a guaranteed 5-6 days or so out of staying chip-free and price is very friendly for a moment, per sale 1 bottle is €2.70 What other nail lacquer brands can be advised in similar price/quality category?

    1. China Glaze are a great polish for a good price aren't they? I'm not sure what are some other good brands for that price point that would be accessible to you. China Glaze is the "cheapest" polish that I buy (and because I need to get them sent from the US they really aren't that cheap). Where are you from? Maybe there is another blogger in your country that would be better suited to answer this question
